Berger InstituteThe Berger Institute for Work, Family, and Children was established in 2001 to be a leading source of research on significant issues impacting the intersection between work and family.

To accomplish this goal, the Berger Institute will:

  • Focus on quantitative research impacting business practices and families;
  • Support high-quality interdisciplinary research by talented CMC professors, which will lead to publishing opportunities;
  • Provide challenging and stimulating educational experiences for CMC students from freshman year through graduation, resulting in high-quality student work and publishing opportunities;
  • Connect the wider CMC community, including alumni and parents of students to provide practical information about significant work/family issues;
  • Partner with government agencies, corporations, and other research organizations to produce research in support for the Berger Institute's mission.

Alumni and Former Board Member, Hon. Eugene Hyman '72, honored for public service by the United Nations.

Hon. Eugene Hyman ’72 was honored with the 2008 United Nations Public Service Award. Hyman and the State of California Superior Court for the County of Santa Clara were recognized in the category of “Improving transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in the Public Services" for “Juvenile Delinquency Domestic Violence and Family Violence Court.” Congratulations to Judge Hyman and Santa Clara County Superior Court!

Congratulations Heather Antecol!

Heather Antecol, Ph.D.Congratulations to Dr. Heather Antecol! Dr. Antecol, Boswell Associate Professor of Economics and acting director of the Berger Institute, was awarded the 2008 Glenn R. Huntoon Teaching Award at Claremont McKenna College.

 

Research Affiliate selected to receive Fulbright Senior Researcher award

Jennifer Ward-Batts, Ph.D.Berger Research Affiliate Jennifer Ward-Batts has been selected to receive a Fulbright Senior Researcher award. She will spend the 2008-09 academic year at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. She plans to conduct research on behavioral effects of education policy and of changes in law in Turkey that may have impacts on outcomes for women and children. These outcomes include women's labor force participation, educational attainment, decision-making power within families, and welfare both inside and outside of marriage. She will also examine how changes in both education policy and women's power within the family may have impacted the welfare of children.
